In Christie’s office, the mood was sombre following the Hague operation. Christie had had the British ambassador to the Netherlands burning her ear about the mess at the ICC Detention Centre. When Christie had suggested the ambassador was overreacting, he bellowed back, ‘He broke three international treaties, Olivia!’

Christie was still seething about the conversation when Winston came to her office to plan their next line of attack.

‘His attacks are becoming increasingly brazen,’ said Winston. ‘Marlow gave us a countdown of a week. To what? That timeframe brings us pretty much present.’

‘What are you thinking?’ asked Christie.

‘I think he’s going to hit us next. Here. In London.’

Christie wasn’t buying it. She pushed her seat back and retreated to her window, looking out over the Thames.

Winston emphasised, ‘We can’t sit around and wait for him.’

That was all she needed to get the idea. ‘What if we get Joseph to come to us?’

Winston looked at the ceiling. After they discussed it further, he knew that what she was suggesting was probably crazy. There was also a very good chance that it might work.

They called up Simeon who was surprisingly receptive about the idea. He had been working through Bogov’s logs and thought he’d found something invaluable. He didn’t have to convince Christie and Winston, though. It was Grant and Gretchen that needed to be persuaded.

Once the pair were on video link in a secure room at the British embassy in The Hague, Simeon came up to Christie’s office to explain what he had found.

‘It’s Bogov’s computer logs. Bogov said that he targeted by location, so I’ve been combing through the IP address locations, and there are five personal computers that had Bogov’s DeathWeep virus on them. Computers belonging to Metropolitan Police officers in the Special Escort Group.’

There was silence. No one but Simeon knew where it was going.

‘They’ve probably got compromised officers under their control now. The rogue Dutch prison officer had a malware attack two weeks ago. Bogov found child pornography on the hard drive. They blackmailed him, he cooperated, they killed him.

Christie remarked, ‘Nice to see terrorists with a moral compass.’

Gretchen asked, ‘But why the SEG? They transport politicians and royalty.’

Winston replied, ‘They also provide armed vehicle support for high-risk prisoners. They think we’re going to transfer Marlow. It’s overdue.’ He looked down at his mobile which was ringing. ‘Excuse me, I have to take this…’ He took his phone out of the office.

Christie said, ‘We’ve been fending off the Crown Prosecution Service for weeks now. We can’t keep him locked up in Vauxhall Cross forever. Like it or not, our sense of security in having Marlow down in the basement is purely illusory. Charing Cross Police Station is far better equipped to hold someone like him. Or Belmarsh.’

Grant could see the angle now. ‘You want to dangle Marlow to lure Joseph into an ambush. Then we can take him in open ground.’

Christie nodded. ‘That’s about the sum of it.’

‘If we’re going to do that, why take the chance in getting Marlow out in the open? We don’t know what sort of manpower Joseph’s packing at this point.
